Top 7 Tips to Get Honest Strategy Feedback from Employees: A Guide for Leaders

Do We Really Need to Involve People Upfront?

While it sounds easier and more efficient to just tell people what you want them to do, we know from our organizational alignment research that active involvement in the strategy design process fosters a needed sense of ownership and involvement.

When it comes to strategic buy-in and commitment, honest strategy feedback from employees is more than just a nice-to-have — it is a necessity to set up strategy execution up for success.

Active employee involvement and two-way communication foster a culture of transparency and trust that empowers teams to make informed decisions that align with both organizational goals and employee needs.

The Benefits of Getting Honest Strategy Feedback from Employees

With so much time and effort put into annual strategy retreat facilitation, it is painful to hear that only 30% of organizations report that they fully execute their strategies. So, what is the problem?

Research by Bain found that the ability to effectively engage employees in the strategy process is the No. 1 strategy execution success factor — more than 50% higher than any other factor.

The 3 Most Important Manager Communications to Get Right

New Managers Continue to Struggle

Almost two-thirds of new managers underperform during their first two years. And those that survive develop bad habits that stay with them throughout their career.

With 85% of new managers receiving no formal new manager training prior to taking on their new leadership role, we are not surprised that new managers aren’t performing as well as those who promoted them had hoped.

Without the opportunity to properly develop and practice the fundamental skills needed to lead others, how can we expect newly promoted managers to be equipped to excel?

But beware. Generic training is not enough to change behavior and performance.

Only 10% of respondents to a recent McKinsey survey said their companies’ frontline manager training is effective in preparing managers to lead. Our own training measurement research found that only 1-in-5 learners change their behavior from stand-alone training.

Leading people is not easy. Changing behavior is not a one-time event. To get it right, treat new manager development as an ongoing change initiative.

There are some important new manager communications, that if done well, make an outsized difference to employee engagement, retention, and performance.

How to Better Communicate the Vision for Change

Does Everyone Understand the Vision for Change?

Experienced change leaders do not assume that employees fully understand all the desired changes or why they are important.

Weak Communications = Weak Change
Poor initial change communications are a major factor in the failure to rally people behind organizational change. Somewhere between the vision for change and the communication for change there is a dangerous gap.

Unfortunately, change messages often fail to resonate with employees and do not inspire their commitment to the new ways of working.

Simply put, if you fail to consistently, transparently, and frequently communicate the vision and urgency for change in a way that resonates with people, your chances for success are slim.

What People Want During Times of Organizational Change
During times of uncertainty, employees want to see a realistic plan to get to a better future state and feel confident about their part in it. The clearer the meaning and purpose behind the change, and the more it aligns with your core values, the easier it will be get people on board.
